Featured Columnist:
Steve Adubato, PhD.

Steve Adubato, PhD., has enjoyed a distinguished career as a broadcaster, author, university professor, and motivational speaker. His book with Theresa Foy DiGeronimo is called "Speak from the Heart: Be Yourself and Get Results" and demonstrates that being a great communicator is about making an authentic connection with people, it is not simply about being "a good talker." What follows is an excerpt from from his book.

Speak from the Heart: Chapter 20– You Are The Message

Audiences of any size respond with interest and enthusiasm to a speaker who they perceive is “real.” That’s the bottom line. It’s a major communication mistake to ignore this basic fact. People who think they can fake it or take a poll to figure out how they should “come across” should think again. The fact is that people can only truly connect with other people on a human, personal level — this is true from presidential candidates on down to family members during dinner conversations. Being on the same intellectual wavelength matters, but if the person you’re talking or listening to believes you’re simply positioning yourself or being a “phony,” no matter how good your material is, no matter how firm your handshake or your direct eye contact, if that person doesn’t see you as real, your communication, and in turn your ability to connect, will fall short.

In the final analysis, there is no way to speak from the heart without being yourself. This sounds simple and self-evident, yet many of us spend a lifetime trying to copy and imitate others, saying what we think we should say, hiding what we truly feel, getting lost in a maze of contrived techniques, and hiding behind high-tech bells and whistles. It seems to me that beyond committing to years of psychotherapy or endless weekends of self-empowerment seminars, we should ask ourselves some very basic questions about who we are, what we believe, what we want to communicate, and how we feel about our audience. The honest answers to these rarely asked questions will tell us not only what to say, but how to say it.

In the introduction to this book, I mentioned the awesome power behind the words of Dr. martin Luther King. For him to deliver the “I Have a Dream” speech, Dr. King had to know himself and what was in his heart. That dream was real for him and he made it real for millions of others. Even his detractors never questioned his belief in what he was saying. That doesn’t happen accidentally or without effort. It happens when we decide to go beyond the surface and look deep inside.

The New Jersey Entrepreneurs Forum – NJEF – was formed in the mid-1980's by entrepreneurs, consultants and investors involved in the development of technology companies. The organization has operated as a training ground for technology entrepreneurs ever since.

In addition to its focus on Central New Jersey and the many technology companies in the region, NJEF has also been a supporter of New Jersey's technology incubators, the NJ Venture Fair, and the various technology transfer programs of the NJ Commission on Science and Technology.

The Newark Arts Council was created to advance and expand the city's artistic and cultural resources. The agency provides leadership, direction, and technical assistance through partnerships with Newark's many artists, arts administrators, community organizations, community development corporations, planning groups, economic development agencies, and the general public.

The Newark Arts Council features artists from Newark, the tri-state region and those with roots around world. These talented artists work with a multitude of mediums including paint, sculpture, fabric, photography and film.
